Myanmar is officially called The Republic Of The Union Of Myanmar and is also known as Burma. It is a sovereign state in South East Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. Myanmar has an uninterrupted coastline of 1,200 miles (1,930 km) along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea and as of 2014 the population of Myanmar is 51 million people.
The government has encouraged tourism in Myanmar since 1992 however fewer than 270,000 tourists entered the country in 2006 according to the Myanmar Tourist Board. The most popular available tourist destinations in Myanmar include big cities such as Yangon and Mandalay, religious sites, nature trails such as in Inle Lake and ancient cities such as Bagan and Mrauk-U. Nevertheless, much of the country is off-limits to tourists.
