Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and city located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 2.6 square miles and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar and at the foot of which is a densely populated town area which is home to over 32,000 people.

Gibraltar International Airport is unusual not only because of its proximity to the city centre meaning the airport terminal is within walking distance of much of Gibraltar, but also because the runway intersects Winston Churchill Avenue, the main north–south street, requiring movable barriers to close the road temporarily when aircraft take-off or land. New roads and a tunnel will end the need to stop road traffic when aircraft use the runway.
